What is Home Care?

Living an independent life becomes much more difficult as we age. Mobility issues, dementia, and a host of other common ailments conspire to make the simple tasks we take for granted that much harder for seniors. But, a growing number of older Americans want to live independently for as long as possible. So how do we bridge the gap for older people who need additional help to thrive but aren’t quite ready for assisted living? That’s where home care comes in.

Home care brings certified nursing assistants (CNA’s) and qualified caregivers into a patient’s home to provide help with the nonmedical, day-to-day tasks they might have trouble accomplishing on their own. And these services – provided over a short or long-term duration – can allow seniors to live in their own homes for longer.

What Services Does Home Care Provide?

Home care services focus on the everyday tasks that are necessary for independent living. These include help with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, meal preparation and menu planning, and light housekeeping and laundry. Caregivers can also help with medication reminders and documentation, shopping, errands, and transportation, or just by providing simple companionship.

Of course, no two people have exactly the same needs. But that’s why this style of care can be such a versatile and powerful tool for seniors. Care programs can be tailor-made for each client to meet their exact needs. And because the care usually occurs one-on-one, there’s plenty of room for communication to adjust the level and nature of care when necessary.

Who Benefits from Home Care?

Home care is most typically offered to seniors on an ongoing basis. In this scenario, caregivers might work with their clients every day, or a couple days per week, or for just a few hours each week. The extra assistance the caregivers provide, gives their patients an opportunity to live on their own for longer and delay a move into assisted living.

Home care is also beneficial for seniors who would normally be self-sufficient but need short-term help to recover from an injury or from a surgical procedure. Home care allows these patients to focus on their recovery over the short-term, so they can resume their independent lives.

How Much Does Homecare Cost?

While home care might sound expensive, it’s really more affordable than you think. And it’s far less expensive than the cost of residential care in an assisted living community or a skilled nursing home. In fact, a senior could save tens of thousands of dollars every year by living at home with the help of a caregiver, rather than moving into full-time residential care.
